I asked Oscar for permission to print some of his commentary about his beloved team, along with the unique role that soccer plays in Argentine culture. To give his thoughts more authenticity, I will provide them first in his native Spanish. I will then attempt to translate his feelings into English.
Mi familia vivió en La Boca, yo viví allí hasta mis 18 años junto a mis abuelos y tíos. Desde muy pequeño me apasionó el fútbol. Te comento que aquí en Argentina los Amoia somos fanáticos de Boca Juniors, un club que seguramente conoces y que aquí es un verdadero fenómeno popular. La Boca es un barrio de Buenos Aires, originariamente habitado por inmigrantes italianos y es allí donde nació Boca Juniors y donde aún se encuentra su mítico estadio de fútbol. El fútbol en este país más allá de ser un tema deportivo es un verdadero hecho social, pasional y emocional.Adjunto te mando fotos del estadio de Boca Juniors con su gente, su pasión, su emoción. Boca me acompañó toda mi vida desde que nací, grité por Boca, lloré por Boca, sufrí por Boca y fuí feliz por Boca. No cabe duda...es un sentimiento. Quizás ahora las emociones se mezclan ya que no es solo que veo a un equipo de fútbol, veo a mi niñez y juventud, recuerdo a mis amigos, a mi familia, a mi barrio...es todo muy movilizador. Cuando fuí joven llegué a seguirlo a Boca practicamente a todos los lugares donde jugara, mi padre me llevó por primera vez a ver un partido cuando yo tenía 5 años...como puedes leer es una cuestión de familia. Aún hoy mi padre sufre con cada partido de fútbol en donde juegue Boca y nos emocionamos juntos ante cada logro deportivo.
Lo de C.A.B.J. significa Club Atlético Boca Juniors. En Argentina los equipos de fútbol son clubes (asociaciones sin fines de lucro), estos clubes se dedican también a otros deportes, por ejemplo basketball, voleyball, etc. No es como en otros paises donde los equipos de fútbol pertenecen a sociedades comerciales o son sociedades comerciales. Asi es que si uno es socio de un club de estos puede practicar deportes además de poder ir al estadio. Con respecto al hecho de ser socio te cuento algo personal. Mi tío me hizo Socio de Boca los primeros días de noviembre de 1956, apenas unos días después de mi nacimiento. Nunca dejé de ser Socil, así fue que hace pocos días me nombraron "Socio Vitalicio" de Boca, a esto se accede luego de 30 años de socio a partir de los 18 años de edad, como yo cumplí 48 años merezco esta categoría. Se hizo una ceremonia en el club donde nos dieron la bienvenida a los nuevos socios vitalicios, el Presidente de Boca nos entregó una medalla, un diploma, etc., fue todo muy emotivo.My family lived in La Boca. I can tell you that here in Argentina, we Amoias are great supporters of Boca Juniors, a team that you surely know, and here is a true popular phenomenon. Boca is a neighborhood of Buenos Aires, originally inhabited by Italian immigrants and it was where the team, Boca Juniors, was founded and is the site of the mythical football stadium. Soccer in this country is more than a sporting theme; it is truly a social, passionate, and emotional mechanism.
Attached I am sending you photos of Boca's stadium with its people, its passion, and its emotion. Boca accompanied me all of my life since the time I was born, I shouted for Boca, I cried for Boca, I suffered for Boca, and was happy for Boca. Without a doubt, it is a feeling. Who knows now the emotions that already have mixed together that I don't only see a soccer team, I see my childhood and youth. I remember my friends, my family, and my neighborhood. It is very moving. When I was young I began to follow Boca practically at all the places that they played. My father brought me for the first time to see a game when I was five years old. As you can see, it is a question of family. Even today my father suffers with every game when Boca plays, and we celebrate each sporting triumph.
The C.A.B.J. acronym means the Boca Juniors Athletic Club. In Argentina, the football teams are clubs (non-profit organizations), and these clubs are dedicated to other sports, for example, basketball and volleyball. This is not as in other countries where the football teams belong to commercial societies or are commercial entities. Such that one is a member of a club and can participate in sports along with being able to go to the stadium. With respect to being made a member, I will share something personal. My uncle sponsored me to become a member of Boca during the first days of November 1956, which was a few days after my birth. A few days later, they nominated me as a "Lifetime Member". This took place after 30 years, starting from the age of 18. When I turned 48, I merited this category. There was a ceremony at the club where they welcomed the new lifetime members, and the President of Boca gave us a medal, a diploma, etc. It was very moving.

Año 1962.
EL PENAL DEL CAMPEONATO: Boca v. River Plate.
Terminaba el año 1962, en ese momento en Argentina se jugaba un solo campeonato de fútbol que iba de marzo a diciembre, Boca no salía campeón desde 1954 y esto tenía a todo el pueblo boquense muy ansioso y expectante. En octubre de ese año yo había cumplido apenas 6 años. En la penúltima fecha del campeonato Boca debía recibir a River Plate (su eterno rival) en la Bombonera y ambos estaban en la primera posición de la tabla del torneo, cabe recordar que en aquellos años el ganador de un partido ganaba 2 puntos y el empate reportaba 1 punto. Es decir que en ese partido se jugaba el campeonato, era una verdadera final.
Era la época en que en Argentina, especialmente en Boca y River, habían desembarcado muchos futbolistas extranjeros especialmente brasileños. En Boca los más destacados eran Orlando, un número 6 de categoría, y Paulo Valentim, un número 9 y goleador de raza que volvió locos a los riverplatenses en cada partido que tuvieron que soportarlo. Aún suena en mis oidos el grito de la hinchada con el famoso canto de aquellas épocas…”Tin, tin, tin…Gol de Valentim”.Ese día La Bombonera estaba absolutamente repleta, el partido fue no apto para cardiacos, Boca se puso en ventaja con un gol de penal de Valentim y ya era practicamente campeón…pero a escasos minutos para terminar el partido el arbitro cobró penal para River. En esa situación se jugaba todo.
El arquero de Boca era Antonio Roma, también arquero de la selección argentina y toda una seguridad en el arco. El encargado de patear el penal de River fue Delem, un brasileño virtuoso y, como todo brasileño, de muy buena pegada. El estadio estaba en un silencio sepulcral, el corazón de todos los que estábamos allí presentes latía desesperadamente…los segundos parecían eternos, yo miraba a mi padre y a mi alrededor, contagiándome de ese ambiente de ansiedad y nerviosismo.
El arco era el que da espaldas al grueso de la hinchada de Boca, es decir que el brasileño tenía a la toda esa multitud de frente. Y allí fue Delem…dio algunos pasos y pateó a la derecha de Roma quien se zambulló y rechazó la pelota a un costado. Aún hoy llevo en mis ojos la imagen de ese momento, aún hoy me emociono de pensar en aquello…el griterío de la gente, yo sin poder ver demasiado más ya que todo fue abrazos, alegría, llanto de emoción…etc…etc… Como se puede leer, fue mi primer gran recuerdo de Boca, de su gente, de su emoción, de su gloria…

It was a time in Argentina, especially at Boca and River, were many Brazilian foreign soccer players made their mark. In Boca, the most outstanding and hailed were a classic number 6 (midfielder), Orlando, along with Paulo Valentim, a natural born center forward (number 9) who scored many goals that made the River supporters crazy during the games against them. I can still hear the shouts of the fans in my ears with the famous song of those times... "Tin, tin, tin... Goal by Valentim".
For this game, the stadium was absolutely filled, and the atmosphere was ripe for heart attacks. Boca went ahead early in the game with a goal by Valentim, and appeared to be practically the champion. But a few minutes from the end of the game, the referee called a penalty for River Plate. In that situation, the whole game was on the line.
The goalkeeper of Boca was Antonio Roma, who was also keeper of the Argentine selection and very secure in the goal area. The one to kick the penalty for River was Delem, a Brazilian virtuoso and, like all Brazilians, a very good striker of the ball. The stadium was in a burial silence, and the heart of all those that were present there desperately annoyed. The seconds seemed like an eternity to us. I watched my father and all around me, infected by that atmosphere of anxiety and nervousness.
All of the most fervent Boca supporters were behind the goal posts. The Brazilian had to face all of that multitude in front of him. And there was Delem. He took a few steps, and kicked the ball to the right of Roma who plunged and parried it to the side. Even still today, I see this image of that moment in my eyes, and it still moves me to think about it. The shouts of the people, without being able to see too much since everyone was hugging each other, the joy, weeping of emotion... etc... As you can read, it was my first great memory of Boca, its people, her emotion, its glory...
